The Fireline Agreement
At the county wildfire command post, logistics coordinator Mara Vance discovers that the official evacuation map has erased a road serving an isolated mountain community. The omission might be a technical correction, or it might protect the timber operation that controls the route. Either way, the fire is moving faster than the paperwork. The paved escape route fills with smoke, radios begin to fail, and residents who were never counted wait for instructions that will not arrive in time. Mara must work with Talia Soren, a skeptical tribal fire captain, a volunteer radio operator, school buses, and a shelter coordinator to build a rescue system from the pieces the county cannot control. As the ridge burns and command fractures, every choice carries a cost in time, trust, or safety. The road may save the community, but using it will put Mara's career and judgment on the record.

Mara Vance had been looking at the map long enough for the blue route lines to lose their meaning. The command post occupied the fairground's livestock office, a low building with bad fluorescent lights and a floor that still smelled faintly of hay. Someone had taped a paper sign over the door: INCIDENT LOGISTICS. The tape was losing its argument with the heat.
Leah Bowers came through the door carrying two radios and a coffee she had forgotten to drink.
