A Manual for Vanishing
A repaired washer speaks Mara Bell's name in the voice of Jonah, the husband who vanished three years ago. In Baltimore basements and narrow kitchens, Mara can fix almost anything except that sound.
Dormant machines hold one last residue from the person who kept them running, and a first successful test destroys it. Mara's sixteen-year-old niece Tessa wants answers. Iris Calder, a polished salvage broker, has built a business around finding families willing to pay for one more minute. Mara's search forces old lies into the open, leaving no room for easy answers or clean absolution.
When Mara traces Jonah's hidden refrigerator to Iris's private cache, she must choose between an unheard memory and the living people caught in its price. Tender, tense magical realism rooted in repair work, family fracture, and ambiguous loss, A Manual for Vanishing follows two women toward a choice neither can take back.

Mrs. Boone's basement always smelled of wet brick, mothballs, and whatever greens she had cooked three days earlier. Mara knelt beside the washer with her flashlight between her teeth, working one-handed around the cracked plastic of the lid switch.
"You need light?" Mrs. Boone asked from the bottom stair.
Mara shook her head. The beam had found the problem. The switch was split where the lid striker hit it, a little white bone snapped clean through. "Need a part that costs less than this machine thinks it does."
