A Practical Guide to the End of the World
Eighteen months before her Louisiana Gulf Coast town crosses an unlivable threshold, disaster-insurance analyst Mara Landry comes home with a confidential map showing the public evacuation route will fail first. The official relocation plan calls itself voluntary. Its fine print makes room for property owners and industrial corridors while renters, workers, and families without an easy way out are told to wait.
Mara has built a career on precise forecasts and careful distance. Back in Belle Rive, distance is no longer possible. Her teenage niece demands more than warnings, her mother refuses to let a lifetime be reduced to a risk score, and Malcolm Boudreaux, the harbor pilot she once left behind, knows exactly how quickly a paper route becomes impassable water.
As evidence of a buried model forces the town into the open, Mara must decide whether to protect the institution that trained her or help build a public order for leaving. A practical guide to survival becomes a story of family, work, and the costly choices required to carry a future forward.

The envelope had no return address, which was how Mara knew it mattered.
It waited on her desk in the Baton Rouge office beneath a paperweight shaped like a pelican. The rest of the room had emptied around it. Screens went dark. The building's air-conditioning shifted into its nighttime complaint, a metallic breathing behind the ceiling tiles.
Mara opened the envelope with a letter knife. Inside was a map printed on heavy stock, the kind of paper meant to survive being handled by people who did not want fingerprints on the decision. Belle Rive spread across the page in shades of blue. The east bank was darkened almost to black. A red line ran along the public evacuation route, then stopped at the low bridge.
