The red clearance banners had begun to sag by the third night.

Tessa Crane noticed it from register four while she counted drawer straps under the greenish hum of the SaveWay ceiling lights. The banners crossed above the checkout lanes in cheap vinyl swags, screaming EVERYTHING MUST GO over empty gum racks, half-priced phone chargers, and the hollow space where lottery tickets used to sit. One corner had peeled loose and swung whenever the automatic doors opened to the dead mall.
