The Last Clean Room
Hana Okafor works in the part of the hospital nobody notices unless something goes wrong
Hana Okafor works in the part of the hospital nobody notices unless something goes wrong. In sterile processing, a tray's weight, a latch, and a barcode can tell the truth before anyone is willing to hear it.
When a sealed surgical tray arrives carrying dried tissue on a supposedly clean instrument, Hana finds an impossible sterilization cycle and a barcode tied to condemned equipment. Her search leads beyond North Star Surgical Hospital to an outsourced depot where old instruments receive new identities, records are rewritten, and contaminated risk is quietly rotated through multiple facilities.

Sealed
The clean side of North Star Surgical Hospital had no windows, which suited Hana Okafor. Windows invited weather and judgment. Here there were only bright panels overhead, racks of wrapped trays, and the wet-metal smell that lived beneath every disinfectant the hospital bought in drums.
At 5:42 a.m., a case cart arrived from the overnight handoff. Its wheels clicked over the threshold, then stopped beside Hana's inspection table.
"Laparoscopic general," said Miguel from transport. "Depot standby return. It was staged for Room Twelve's first case."
