Second Serve

By SHAWN CLEMENS· [email protected]

A donor pulls $42,000 from Cleveland's municipal adaptive-tennis program, leaving former champion Mara Kincaid thirty days to keep cracked public courts, repaired chairs, and hard-won player access from falling under private control.

Mara can organize a tournament, outwork a budget crisis, and ignore a bad ankle. Accepting help is harder, especially from Dr. Simon Vale, a community physician whose past decision helped deny her an informed choice about her own career. As a polished academy offers rescue with strings, Mara and Simon must decide whether their growing trust can survive truth, public pressure, and the cost of saying no.

Set among lake wind, city hall, and neighborhood gyms, Second Serve is a warm, sharp contemporary sports romance about consent, community, and two adults building a life that does not depend on silence. The hearing is coming, and Mara has to choose what kind of future she is willing to fight for.

This record is not a current verification of the book’s rights. The scope above describes the recorded review; current book information may have changed.

Manuscripts and inventory fingerprints identify supporting files. Confirmation of the provider, work version, and documents establishing publishing rights is required before a current rights verification can be issued.

A file inventory identifies recorded materials; it does not establish ownership by itself. No fixed contractual expiration describes the agreement’s duration, subject to statutory copyright terms.

Cold came off Lake Erie in flat sheets, sliding between chain-link fence and cracked court like it had business there.

Mara Kincaid stood at center court and watched a tennis ball skip once, twice, then die in a seam wide enough to swallow a dime. She lifted her right heel, rolled her ankle slow inside brace and tape, and tried not to think about the way the joint answered with that old, hot complaint. November did not care who had won Grand Slams and who had spent half life teaching bodies how to move around damage. November only cared about damp, wind, and whatever shape mercy took on municipal courts in Cleveland.
