Static on the Wire
When a solar storm knocks Detroit's digital systems sideways, seventeen-year-old Rhea repairs an old shortwave radio and hears a conversation that has not happened yet. A boy she has never met is apologizing for giving away a key, and someone is hiding in an east stairwell.
As Rhea helps rebuild West Caniff's neighborhood relay, the impossible broadcasts begin pointing toward real families, missing people, and refuge sites the city must not find. Mateo, the careful volunteer assigned to work beside her, believes managed networks can save lives. Rhea knows that every signal can also expose someone who survives by staying unseen. Their growing trust becomes another risk when the radio starts echoing choices they have not made.
With the blackout deepening and the city's prediction system pressing for control, Rhea must decide what a warning is worth, who gets to carry it, and when connection becomes another form of possession. The next call may save a life, reveal a shelter, or change the future they are trying to protect.

The radio had been dead for nine minutes when Rhea found the loose wire.
She was kneeling under the workbench, one shoulder pressed against a crate of donated batteries, while rain ticked against the station windows. Outside, Detroit kept losing pieces of itself. The traffic lights on Livernois had gone dark before dinner. The pharmacy sign across the avenue blinked OPEN, OPEN, nothing, as if it couldn't decide whether anyone was still allowed inside. Somewhere south, a generator coughed and caught.
Rhea held the wire between two fingers. The copper was green at the end, corroded where somebody had twisted it into a terminal instead of soldering it. She snipped the bad inch, stripped the insulation with her thumbnail, and made a clean loop.
