When the first snow quiets Buffalo, nine-year-old Willa finds a tiny door beneath the eaves of her family’s new duplex. A sparrow slips through it and drops her mother’s lost silver button, then vanishes into a winter city hidden behind the walls. Soon birds begin carrying back objects tied to people who left the neighborhood without finishing a promise, a goodbye, or a journey. With her skeptical older brother Theo, Willa follows their route through frozen streets and stalled doors. There she meets the Keeper of Unfinished Departures, a lonely force that believes nothing can be lost if nothing is allowed to change. As the full moon approaches, the hidden city begins to freeze. Willa must decide whether home is something to preserve exactly or something living enough to let go. To free the birds, she will have to name what she misses and release the object that holds her closest to the past.

## The Door Under the Eaves
The snow began while Willa was carrying a box marked KITCHEN, though half the things in it were books.
It came sideways across the street, thin at first, then thick enough to blur the houses opposite. The duplex had a porch with two steps and a railing that leaned away from the building as if it wanted to leave. Willa stood beneath it with the box pressed to her ribs and watched the flakes fill the narrow path Mina had shoveled that morning.
